Week 8 – Artist Interview- Macabee Shelley and Brian

In Gatov Gallery West, there was an art show like nothing I had ever seen before! I’m still not really sure what to think of it! It was so extremely different from all the other shows and exhibits we have seen over the past 8 weeks but it was so cool! I think the artist’s take on this was really interesting and so creative. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the photo booth that was set up. Macabee Shelley explained that we are all free to use it to take our own photos and then shared that the slideshow on the t.v. screen next to it was made up of all the pictures that had been taken by people visiting the gallery. I thought this was a really cool idea because it lets the viewers and audience be a part of the show in a much bigger way than just observing it. Macabee Shelley put it as “You guys are making the art in this case”. I also thought the time lapse videos that were constantly projected onto the walls of the artists’ days of setting up was really neat because it displayed all of the work that was put into this show. Macabee Shelley referred to the term Geomancy as an inspiration to a lot of his work and he was then asked where he got that idea and he said that he had actually learned about it through a blog post written by a student in Art 110! He thought it was so interesting after further researching it which is awesome because how cool is it that an artist is using input and thoughts from his audience of students to inspire more art work! He referred to is glass pieces that we had seen in one of our first visits to the art galleries while talking about geomancy and how cool it is that even as the artist, you never know exactly how things are going to turn out but makes it that more interesting because results always open up the mind. He explained this room, although may have a lot going on at once, is really meant to create an experience for us and thats why there are couches and cushions to sit on and actual books to read. It’s meant to bring people together.

When first walking into the gallery displaying Dianna Franco’s work, I wasn’t too sure what exactly I was looking at or even seeing in her art pieces. They were all extremely bright and had a beautiful use of very lively colors but they did not portray any specific subjects or ideas which was interesting and definitely got me thinking. When talking to Dianna about her art I learned that she has been working on these pieces since last summer, summer of 2014 and said that the average time for each piece was about 2 weeks. She said that she would just continue to work on them whenever she had time but would sometimes find herself spending all day painting. That’s super awesome to me that she can just get lost in her art like that. She said she has been interested in art since as long as she can remember and it has always been a passion of hers but began to take it more seriously by taking different art classes at the age of 20.

Dianna was asked if she purposefully doesn’t name her pieces and the answer was yes. Dianna stated that the reason for leaving her art pieces untitled is because of a psychology class she had previously taken which made her realize that she would like to leave them without titles to leave more to the viewers’ imagination. Instead of telling her audience what we are looking at she likes to have them open to interpretation and let who ever is looking at her work decide for themselves what they are looking at! I think that is so fun because instead of just staring at a portrait of someone or a painting of a obvious object or scene, it adds so much to the art viewing experience. She said she watched a lot of outer space videos for inspiration which I definitely could tell how that influenced her paintings. She says she used outerspace for her inspiration because she believes that there is so much more than just whats on the surface of things and says that outer space and the world beyond ours really signifies that.

Makaila Palmers series of paintings are based on the euro bills which I find very interesting and creative of her. While listening to her talk about her paintings you can sense how passionate and proud she is of them which I would be too if I had creative such beautiful pieces of art! Each of her paintings is so colorful and really made me want to see the different places represented in her art pieces for myself! She claimed that if you pay attention and look closely at her paintings you can actually find numbers within her painting. When I went back to get a better look, I did infact find the numbers after a few moments!

My favorite part about Makaila’s paintings was the fact that they clearly portrayed beautiful landscapes of beautiful places but did not consist of any sharp or exact outlines. It appeared to me to just be many different colors painting vaguely to create a relaxed image. My favorite painting was her oil on canvas of Venice. I absolutely loved the purple colors used in the bottom half of the painting and then the subtle contrasting colors in the top half representing the buildings. It was very, very pretty. Also, I have always dreamed of traveling to Europe, Venice being one of the main places I would like to see and visit in my lifetime.
